We follow the National Literacy Strategy. Extra time beyond the Literacy Hour is given to the teaching of writing.  Children are taught to write for different purposes including writing imaginatively and from personal experience.  Handwriting is taught and correct formation of letters is stressed from the earliest days so that children can achieve a legible joined handwriting style.

PHONICS - Children begin learning the Jolly Phonics approach to letter and sound recognition in the Foundation Stage.

Our core reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree. However, we introduce children to a range of different reading material at all stages of reading ability.

The development of children's use and understanding of language is central to their development of literacy and to their ability to communicate socially and academically.  We plan to teach elements of vocabulary within all areas of the curriculum.  Children participate in discussions, drama and in public speaking.  These build confidence and clarity of speech.
